Launch Thun Reliance May 2024

Preem's path to excellence

Chartering Thun Reliance for climate-neutral refinery progress

On 3 May, the Thun Reliance was launched and christened by godmother Camilla Dimberg, Preem's representative. This new tanker will sail for fuel company Preem. Let's take this opportunity to get to know this valued partner of Thun Tankers. We had the pleasure of talking to Daniel Berndolf, head of the shipping department at Preem AB.

Can you give us a brief introduction to Preem and its activities?

Preem commands approximately 80 percent of the Swedish production capacity, and approximately half of the nation's liquid fuel consumption is derived from Preem.

At present, we are executing an extensive transition endeavor, wherein the gradual displacement of fossil fuels in favor of renewable alternatives is underway. This transition is being meticulously orchestrated to ensure the continuity and dependability of fuel supply both domestically in Sweden and internationally.

What makes Preem different from other fuel companies, in Sweden and/or internationally?

We have set forth a definitive objective: Preem is poised to become one of the pioneering climate-neutral refinery enterprises globally. As the foremost producer of advanced renewable fuels in Scandinavia and the premier refining entity in the Nordic region, our dedication to augmenting renewable fuel production and distribution remains unwavering. Simultaneously, we are steadfastly committed to preserving our competitive edge through the inception and execution of renewable fuel initiatives. The metamorphosis of our business framework stands as a paramount priority in the realization of our overarching strategic vision.

How do you perceive MF Shipping Group as a ship manager (responsible for the technical, crew and quality management) of the tankers? What aspects are significant to you in this partnership?

MF Shipping group is regarded as a shipping manager of high quality which is important in every aspect of our business from everyday safety for the crew, environment and cargo to the assurance that should an issue occur we know that they will do their utmost to find a rapid solution in order to minimize any loss.

What actions and measures is Preem for example taking to optimise environmental transport of its products?

Preem strive to have a modern and effective fleet and are always looking to reducing ballast legs and optimize cargo intake to reduce the environmental impact from our transports. We utilize various IT-solutions to aid us in this but most of all we have committed and experienced employees doing their best to raise the bar every day.

How does Thun's transition to more sustainable vessels with battery power, shore power and reduced bunker consumption affect you?

We firmly believe that the latest vessels, characterized by enhancements in cargo capacity and fuel efficiency, alongside other emission-reduction initiatives, stands as a highly suitable solution aligning with both Preem's and our customers' requisites. Its adoption is poised to significantly contribute to the overarching objective of transitioning towards a sustainable society.

What advice or recommendations would you offer MF Shipping Group regarding our services?

Safety is always at the top of our game and we always appreciate MF Shippings rapid and resolute response to our needs and being proactive in order to mitigate any issues that could lead safety issues or otherwise hamper our business.

Lastly: we have heard that you prefer to keep the same crew on board of the new vessel. That is a great compliment towards the crew!  Why/what do they stand out in? and what  would be your message/advise to our crew in general?

The crew on the Thun Evolve has been with us for a long time and has done an excellent job in this highly demanding trade. It is extremely important to have an understanding for one another in order to get the most out of the cooperation between the vessel and the chartering/operation side. The professionalism and knowledge onboard all Thun Tanker vessels are the largest contribution to the safe operation as well as short and effective turnaround in port which all is key to a successful delivery.

The Thun Reliance was launched on 3 May 2024 at a ceremony at the shipyard in Leer, Germany.
