TBS Group at the yard for suppling

A partnership built on trust: TBS Group & MF Shipping Group

In the demanding world of maritime logistics, few partnerships are as successful as that between TBS Group and MF Shipping Group (MFSG). For decades, these companies have worked together to ensure that vessels around the world are well supplied and efficiently maintained. We spoke to Stefan Hamelink, Operations Manager at TBS Group, to explore this collaboration and its impact.

A century of expertise in ship handling

TBS Group, a specialist in ship handling and catering, has been in business for almost a century. "We started as a local supplier in Terneuzen in the 1930s and have grown into a global leader," says Stefan. The partnership with MFSG dates back to the 1980s, starting with voyages to Scandinavia.

Mutual growth and adaptation

TBS Group started supplying MFSG when it was still known as Ahlmark and Sandfirden. The first vessel, mv Olivier, operated between Antwerp and Calais. As MFSG expanded its fleet, TBS adapted, providing everything from ship stores to budget management services. "We have scaled our operations to meet MFSG's needs throughout Europe and beyond," explains Stefan.

Overcoming maritime challenges

Maritime logistics presents constant challenges, from last-minute schedule changes to extreme weather. "Working with MFSG has always been seamless," says Stefan. He recalls a delivery in Vasteras, Sweden, in -18°C conditions. "Despite treacherous roads, we made sure the deliveries arrived on time. Remote locations such as Gotland present similar challenges, but we always find a way".

A strong relationship with the crews

The partnership goes beyond business. "MFSG crews appreciate the Dutch products we supply, which they miss when they sail abroad. Small details make a big difference," says Stefan. Open communication and mutual respect have strengthened the relationship over the years.

A historic expedition: Serving the Arctic

A highlight of their collaboration was the 1988 Arctic expedition. "MFSG, then Sandfirden, asked us to supply ships and crews for a polar base in Antarctica," recalls Stefan. TBS Group provided both the crews and 80 construction workers to ensure that the supplies could withstand the extreme conditions. The success led to two more expeditions and cemented their relationship. "We still have a bottle of Hooghoudt from that trip, stamped in Antarctica - a reminder of our shared history."

Keys to success: Adaptability and innovation

Long-term partnerships come with challenges, but TBS Group's ability to adapt has been crucial. "Where people are involved, there will always be 'kinks in the cable'. Our in-house customs and transport management allows us to solve problems immediately," says Stefan.

To increase efficiency, TBS has implemented digital solutions. "Our dashboards allow MFSG to track orders in real time, reducing rework and improving transparency." Looking ahead, they plan to integrate purchasing and sales solutions to streamline enquiries, quotations and orders.

Looking to the future

TBS Group remains committed to strengthening its partnership with MFSG. "Our aim is to maintain a high level of service and ensure that every customer feels valued," concludes Stefan. Ongoing communication with MFSG's crews and purchasing departments ensures continuous improvement, reinforcing a collaboration that has stood the test of time.
